QUESTIONING THE ACCESSIBILITY
Democracy of spaces is a platform developed in association with few members of the differently-abled community in the state of Kerala in India. The main aim of this platform is to question the presence
(or absence) of spacial democracy in the state and the country. The voices and concerns of the community have been featured here, and an attempt is made to map the availability of accessible spaces and thereby also questioning the accessibility of the spaces we consider "accessible".
We intend to raise awareness about barrier-free and universal designs among the people, government and architects/ designers.

STEPS THAT FAIL

One of my long term goals is to get fully independent- to anywhere without anybody’s help. Getting an adapted vehicle has helped me a lot. I also bought a wheelchair that can be dismantled and put into the car by myself. I still need someone to open the gate for me.
At first glance, the hilly and uneven places in Kerala are a completely inaccessible place for a wheelchair user. But once I started driving, that problem was resolved.
The main hindrance for me is that, every building has steps. A friend’s house, a local shop, a private company which brings a potential employment opportunity,… all of these are beyond my reach because I can’t find a way to climb those steps without calling anyone for help. I am working on it and trying different approaches to find a solution.
I want to use this opportunity to write about a man in his 50s who is stuck in his house in a hilly area for several years, and they can’t afford to build a ramp. Even if the whole town is barrier-free, he won’t be able to access that facility. The barrier-free environment should develop outward from the home to the community.

Apart from that, I have visited every other place across the state. After my recent visit to Mysore, I realised that whether it is Kerala or Karnataka, tourist places still remain largely inaccessible and are not disabled-friendly at all."

പണ്ടു നമ്മൾ കുറേ സിനിമാക്കഥകൾ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് നീ ഓർക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ? സോളമന്റെ മുന്തിരിത്തോട്ടങ്ങളെ പറ്റിയൊക്കെ. തീയറ്ററിൽ പോയി ഒരു സിനിമ കാണാൻ ഞാൻ കുറേ നാളായി ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. നിനക്കറിയാല്ലോ നമ്മുടെ നാട് ഒട്ടും വീൽചെയർ ഫ്രണ്ട്‌ലിയല്ലാന്ന്. അവിടെ മാത്രമല്ല, ബാങ്ക്, ATM കൗണ്ടറുകൾ, ഹോട്ടലുകൾ, വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെയൊന്നും ഞങ്ങളെ പോലുള്ള ഭിന്നശേഷിക്കാർക്ക് കടന്ന് ചെല്ലാൻ കൂടി പറ്റാത്തയിടങ്ങളാണ്. മുമ്പത്തെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ചില മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും നമ്മുടെ പൊതുയിടങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോഴും ഭിന്നശേഷി (വീൽചെയർ) സൗഹൃദമല്ല.
സഞ്ചരിക്കാനുള്ള ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ മാത്രമല്ലല്ലോ നമുക്കുള്ളത്. പുറത്ത് വച്ച് ഒന്ന് പെട്ടന്ന് ടോയിലറ്റിൽ പോണമെന്ന് തോന്നിയാലോ? വീൽചെയറിലുള്ള പുരുഷന്മാരെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് സ്ത്രീകളാണ് ഇത്തരം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ കൂടുതൽ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നത്. പലരും ഇങ്ങനത്തെ പല കാരണങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ വീട്ടിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തിറങ്ങാതെ നാല് ചുമരുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ ഒതുങ്ങി കൂടി കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇതിനൊക്കെ എന്തെങ്കിലും മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരണമെന്ന് ആത്മാർത്ഥമായി ഞാനാഗ്രഹിക്കാറുണ്ട്. നമ്മുടെ ജനപ്രതിനിധികൾ ഇതിനു മുൻകൈ എടുത്തിരുന്നെങ്കിലെന്നും. പലപ്പോഴും തോന്നാറുണ്ട് വീൽ ചെയറിലുള്ളവർ എല്ലാം കൂടി വിദേശത്തേയ്ക്ക് താമസം മാറ്റണമെന്ന്. ഞാനങ്ങ് വരട്ടെ, ലണ്ടനിലേക്ക്? ഹ .. ഹ.. വീണ്ടും തമാശയാട്ടോ..
ശരിയ്ക്കും മാറ്റങ്ങൾ നമ്മുടെയൊക്കെ വീടുകളിൽ നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങണം. അതു പറയാനാണ് ഞാനീ കത്ത് പ്രധാനമായും എഴുതുന്നത്. നമ്മൾ ഒരു വീട് വയ്ക്കുന്നത് എല്ലാ കാലത്തേയ്ക്കും വേണ്ടിയല്ലേ. പക്ഷെ വീടിന്റെ പ്ലാൻ വരയ്ക്കുമ്പോഴൊന്നും നമ്മൾ വീൽ ചെയർ കയറുന്ന ഒരു റാമ്പിനെ പറ്റി ചിന്തിക്കാറേയില്ല. വീടകം വീൽ ചെയർ സൗഹൃദമാവുന്നതിനെ പറ്റി ആലോചിക്കാറില്ല. ശരിക്കും അതൊരു ആവശ്യമല്ലേ? നീ നിന്റെ അമ്മയെ വീട്ടിനുളളിലേക്കും പുറത്തേക്കും കൊണ്ടു പോകാനുള്ള ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ പറഞ്ഞത് എനിക്കിപ്പോഴും ഓർമ്മയുണ്ട്.
നീ വീട് പണിയുമ്പോൾ ഇതൊക്കെ ഓർത്തെങ്കിലെന്ന് ഞാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. അഥവാ ഇതിനെ പറ്റി അറിവില്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിക്കാമെന്ന് കരുതി. പറഞ്ഞാൽ നീയത് ചെയ്യുമെന്നെനിക്കറിയാം. അത് മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കും ഒരു മാതൃക ആവുമല്ലോ. പിന്നേ, ഈ റാമ്പിന് ഒരു നിശ്ചിത അളവുണ്ട്. ആ അളവിൽ തന്നെ ചെയ്യണം. വീടിനകവും വീൽചെയർ ഫ്രണ്ട്‌ലി ആയിരിക്കണം. പലപ്പോഴും നമ്മൾ പണിയുന്ന വീടിനകത്തെ ടോയ്‌ലറ്റുകളുടെ വാതിൽ ചെറുതായിരിക്കും. നമ്മൾ ഒരു റൂമിന്റെ വാതിലിന് എത്ര എടുക്കുന്നോ ആ വീതി തന്നെ ടോയ്ലറ്റ് വാതിലുകൾക്കും എടുക്കുക. ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത ആഡംബരങ്ങൾ ടോയ്‌ലറ്റിനുള്ളിൽ ചെയ്യുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കുക. ഒരു വീൽചെയർ അതിനുള്ളിൽ കടന്നാൽ അതിലിരുന്നു തന്നെ കുളിക്കാനും, ടോയ്ലറ്റിൽ പോകാനുമുള്ള സൗകര്യമുണ്ടായിരിക്കണം. ഒരു മുറിയെങ്കിലും പൂർണമായി വീൽചെയർ സൗഹൃദം ആയിരിക്കണം.
നാളെ ഒരുപക്ഷേ നമ്മൾക്കൊരു അപകടം പറ്റുകയോ , വാർദ്ധക്യത്തിൽ എത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ വീൽചെയർ ആശ്രയിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നാലോ എന്ന് ചിന്തിക്കുന്നതിൽ തെറ്റൊന്നുമില്ല

THE WORLD AROUND ACHAMMA'S BED
T.C. Vijayakumari, My achamma (paternal grandmother )was bedridden for 26 long years till her death in 2009. She never hugged her 10 grandkids, but she was the best grandmother we could ask for. Her world was not limited to her bed she was physically confined to. She was the head of a joint family of around 20 members, enjoyed watching cricket, She owned and managed a chit fund with the help of my grandfather and most importantly, she made time to tell me all the beautiful stories she knew.
In those 26 years, she left her room only twice and the major reason was her health and the other was the fact that none of us, including her, thought about another option. We are conditioned to believe that differently-abled people's lives are limited to the four walls around them. Years passed the mind of the differently-abled community (the entire community) has changed, they do want to travel, get an education, work and lead a life which is not different from everyone else. But the system still fails to provide the basics infrastructure needed for their mobility. With this study project, I would like to point out that the democratization of spaces is not a luxury but a basic human right.

TOILET BEYOND BARRIERS
The foremost indicator of democracy of access to a public space perhaps could be who, when and how one gets to access the basic amenities of a public space. When looked at from the perspective of universal access to public spaces, accessibility remains a challenge for people who suffer from physical, sensory and intellectual disability. Toilet is one of the most important basic amenities that a public space should have on offer for general public. The complexity behind this simple infrastructure is way beyond the visible perceptions on defecation. The ideally omnipresent entity, toilet, is exposed to a curious experiment, "toilet beyond barriers".
